Explosive areas that are rich in flammable gases have stringent requirements on electrical circuits and hardware. Among these requirements are "Explosion Proof", "Intrinsically Safe" and "Nonincendive" which are well defined elsewhere on the Internet.
When it comes to drying compressed air in an explosion proof area, membrane air dryers offer considerable benefits. They can operate safely in these environments as they lower the compressed air dew point without any source of spark or energy able to create combustion. Refrig dryers and PSA dryers typically require electrical controls to be enclosed in NEMA explosion proof rated enclosure. These enclosures add greatly to the cost of the dryer. Membrane air dryers are thus the best choice for such environments.
